Jane Iredale Dream Tint - Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 (Peach Brightener)

A Very In-Depth Review of Jane Iredale’s Dream Tint With SPF 15

June 18, 2013

So this is a bit awkward.

After vehemently dissing BB & CC creams and calling them a beauty fad that must quickly die soon, I found one CC cream that I actually like!

Jane Iredale’s Dream Tint –
Tinted Moisturizer With SPF 15 (Peach Brightener)

Jane Iredale is a mineral cosmetics brand that I was introduced to by Kris of Kris Discoveries.

Kris was actually the one who gave me this sample of Jane Iredale’s Dream Tint because she somehow knew that I would love it!

Jane Iredale Dream Tint - Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 (Peach Brightener)

What It Is

A multi-tasking tinted moisturizer which works to…

– Hydrate the skin
– Provide broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection
– Provide light coverage for a soft-focus, smooth and even complexion

The Dream Tint comes in seven different colors.

The color that I have is Peach Brightener.

The Ingredients

Active Ingredient: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891) 4.5%
Inactive Ingredients: Aqua/Water/Eau, Algae Extract, Sambucus Nigra (Elder Flower) Extract, Dimethicone, Jojoba Esters, Octyldodecyl, Neopentanoate, Glyceryl Stearate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Glycerin, Raphanus Sativus (Radish) Root Extract, Boron Nitride, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Extract, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate
May Contain: Iron Oxides (CI 77489, CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Mica (CI 77019), Ultramarines (CI 77007), Chromium Oxide Greens (CI 77288)

Beneficial ingredients:

  • Algae Extract – which works to moisturize and sooth the skin
  • Elder Flower Extract – which has skin soothing properties
  • Shea butter and Sunflower Seed Oil – which both moisturize and nourish
  • White Tea Leaf Extract and Grapefruit Seed Extract – which provides anti-oxidants
  • Lavender Oil – which is soothing for the skin
  • Pomegranate – which provides anti-oxidants (though it’s comes in at the bottom of the list, meaning there’s a lower concentration of this ingredient in the product)

Ingredients of concern:

  • Dimethocone – a form of silicone, and a concern for those  in the anti-silicones camp
  • Algae extract – algae can be potentially irritating to the skin, depending on the kind that is used. Here, the kind of algae used has not been listed
  • Lavender Oil – which has also been called into question for being a potential irritant

Ingredients of interest:

  • Titanium Dioxide which protects against the sun
  • Boron nitride, a mineral which in Dream Tint works to help diminish the appearance of wrinkles and give skin a silky feeling

How To Use This

First, I put little dots of the tinted moisturizer around my face.

Then with a liquid foundation brush, I use small quick strokes to blend it onto my skin.

I didn’t get instructions on how to use this, but it turns out that that’s actually how you’re supposed to apply this!

The Dream Tint can also be used as a primer before you apply your regular foundation.

My Experience

There’s not much to the scent. The color of the Peach Brightener has a tinge of light pink.

The cream absorbs quickly. If you follow the directions and place small dots of the cream around your face first then blend with a foundation brush, you shouldn’t have problems with the cream drying too fast.

Once you work it into your skin, you barely see the tint at all.

The folks at Jane Iredale are not lying when they say that this product provides very light coverage.

For me, it does a good job of unifying my skin complexion.

If you have more troublesome skin issues, I would suggest dabbing on a bit of concealer first over dark spots and blemishes.

Wearing the cream, it feels very light and my skin stays comfortable and hydrated throughout the day.

The Results

The cream smoothes over my blemishes and gives my skin a dewy glow.

You can’t tell much of a difference, at least in photos. But in person, the difference is definitely real.

I also noticed that the more time that passes the better my skin looks.

While sitting at a restaurant a few hours after putting on the cream, my boyfriend Oliver seriously could not stop complimenting me about how good my skin looked!

And he doesn’t usually notice my skin 😉

Later on, it tends to feel a little greasy though it doesn’t make my skin look greasy.

In Summary

What I Love About Jane Iredale’s Dream Tint

+ Very convenient. It acts as a moisturizer, sunscreen and foundation all in one go!
+ Makes my complexion look smooth and even
+ Blends like a dream. No streaks and no cakeyness.
+ Gives my skin a healthy, dewy glow
+ Keeps my skin hydrated throughout the day
+ Doesn’t oxidize/change into an orangey color or make my skin look greasy over time
+ My skin looks even better the longer I have it on!

What I Don’t Like About It

– Has ingredients that may be potentially irritating
– Feels somewhat greasy after several hours

Concluding Thoughts

There is A LOT to love about Jane Iredale’s Dream Tint!

This is an ideal product for people who don’t have a lot of skin issues to cover up.

The small sample size has lasted me long enough that I think paying that much for the full-size would be worth it as you only need to use a little bit of it to get the desired effect.

I love the convenience of an all-in-one cream (moisturizer, sunscreen & foundation)! Consider me schooled in the ways of CC creams.

What I love most about Jane Iredale’s Dream Tint is the way that it makes my skin look so smooth and dewy!

Before making the commitment of buying this product in full-size though… I hesitate about the fact that one of the main ingredients is algae.

I’ve been experiencing some bad skin reaction from other products containing algae, so I have a growing suspicion that my skin does not like algae.

So far, my rather sensitive skin has not reacted badly from using the Dream Tint.

And I think it’s because as I mentioned, there are different types of algae extracts used in cosmetic products and they are not all irritating to the skin.

But still, it does sometimes happen that skin becomes sensitized to certain ingredients after a while.

BareMinerals Ready SPF 20 Foundation

Product Review: BareMinerals Ready SPF 20 Foundation

May 10, 2013

What makes mineral makeup so great is not so much the natural minerals that it contains, but rather, all the other ingredients that are left out.

Because it does not contain preservatives, fragrance, and chemical dyes, mineral makeup is suitable for people who suffer from skin sensitivities.

It is also oil-free and made up of inorganic minerals, which means there is less potential for bacteria growth. So mineral makeup is especially useful for people with acne-prone skin.

Most importantly, mineral makeup provides a wide spectrum of UVB and UVA sun protection.

The main ingredients in mineral makeup are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide—which are physical sunscreens that provide broad-spectrum sun protection against UVA and UVB rays. But I’ll make a special note on that later.

BARE ESCENTUALS

Although there are many companies today who carry their own line of mineral makeup, I have a great affinity for Bare Escentuals because it was one of the original, if not the first, cosmetic company to bring out and popularize mineral makeup in the 70s.

I’ve been using Bare Escentuals’ bareMinerals Ready SPF 20 Foundation for over two weeks now. And I’ve got to say…

This powder foundation is ZE BEST I’VE EVER HAD!

BareMinerals Ready SPF 20 Foundation

BareMinerals Ready SPF 20 Foundation

BareMinerals Ready SPF 20 Foundation

The powder: A solid, pressed powder that provides medium to full coverage and wide spectrum protection against the sun (SPF 20).

The Ready foundation comes in a wide variety of shades, so it’s easy to find a color that perfectly suits your skin tone.

I use the R330
color, for tan skin with yellow-olive undertones.

Bare Escentuals claims that wearing this foundation can increase hydration levels in the skin up to 108% after 12 hours of wear, due to their SeaNutritive Mineral Complex formula that contains humic acid and mineral-encapsulated glycerin.

How To Use: I use a kabuki powder brush to apply this powder in sweeping, circular strokes. And that has always given me a smooth finish. There is a bareMinerals Precision Brush that you can buy (at 28 euros) with this foundation. Though I’ve read that applying this with a foundation sponge works just as well.

My Experience: This powder glides on like silk. It blends well and provides excellent coverage. You can easily layer on where you need more coverage. It’s a very light powder, you can’t see it at all! There’s no cakeyness, or powder settling in creases. And a little goes a long way for covering blemishes.

The Result: A natural, glowy, dewy and even complexion that lasts for hours and hours.

I can’t say that using this foundation increased the level of hydration on my face. But it does help retain moisture for areas on my face that tend to dry out.

What I Like About It:
– Smooth, luminous finish
– The resulting look is very subtle and natural
– Great, long-lasting coverage
– My skin can breathe and feel comfortable
– Provides protection against the sun
– Easy to re-apply (for sun protection purposes)
– Clean and simple ingredients
– Simple packaging

What I Don’t Like About It:
– Opening the container is a bit tricky
– It would be great if they could make the packaging re-fillable to limit the impact on the environment

How Much: 28,00€

Would I Buy It Again: YESSSS. It’s a bit pricey, but as I said, a little goes a long way. And the resulting look is just flawless. So this will probably be my favorite powder foundation for a while.

Ingredients: Boron Mitride, Titanium Dioxide, Octyldodecyl stearoyl stearate, caprylic/capric triglyceride, glycerin, magnesium silicate, nylon-12, humic acids, rosa canna fruit oil, jojoba esters, corallina officanilis extract, Lecithin, Betain, Algae Extract. May contain (+/-): Mica, Zinc Oxide (CI77947), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Titanium Dioxide (CI77891).

Closing Thoughts: With so many shades to choose from, it’s better to go out to a store and be color matched in person than buying this online.

Also, be aware that in order to be completely protected from the sun, you’d have to put on layers and layers of this stuff on your face. This is true for pretty much all foundations that claim to protect you from the sun. So if that’s not the kind of look you’re going for, then I suggest wearing a moisturizer with SPF underneath the powder.

There’s so much to be said about sunscreen and SPF in products. But that’s a subject that we will revisit in future posts.

What about you? Have you tried this product before? What is your current favorite foundation?

A Free Makeup Session With UNE

December 12, 2012

I have this weakness… I can’t say no to free things.

So when Mademoiselle BIO (one of my favorite natural cosmetics shop) offered me a free makeup session with the brand UNE, I simply couldn’t resist. I’m going to go ahead and spoil the ending for you…. I actually ended up buying one of the UNE makeup products that was used on me today. So in the end, it wasn’t entirely a free lunch.

Overall though, I was quite pleased with the resulting look and the product that I took home.

UNE is another up and coming french natural and organic makeup brand. It’s been making a splash through a recent surge of marketing. In case you were curious, UNE is the word for “one” in french. Their powders, blushes and shadows are made from minerals. Just like with Organiqs, I noticed that UNE’s color palette also tends to be on the light and subtle side. No bright pinks or teals, which was actually a little bit disappointing since I’ve recently become fond of bold-colored eyeshadows. UNE’s eyeshadow color palette does include dark browns and black, which were used for my makeup session this afternoon.

My makeup artist, who introduced herself as “Whitney, like Whitney Houston,” didn’t just expertly put makeup on my face. She also gave me helpful makeup tips. For example, when putting blush on your cheeks, don’t just focus on the round fleshy part of your cheeks. Use upward motions and taper the blush up to your temples with graduating intensity. Hey, I’m learning! I asked her a lot of questions, especially about the brushes that she used and where she got them and whether she preferred natural bristles over synthetic bristles. She said she had no preference.

Choosing which product to purchase among the foundation, eyeshadow, mascara, blush and lipstick that she used on me, I went with the mineral powder foundation. Mainly because the powder is great at making my complexion look smooth and uniform without giving away the fact that I’m wearing makeup at all. The powder comes in this white sliding rectangular container with a reflective surface. I also received a free makeup bag and an “I am Une” bag for the powder (which is more like a little brown sock).

My takeaway thought from today, and I think we can all agree on this: getting makeup put on your face with the use of brushes is one of the most relaxing sensations in the world.
