Men Need to Care for their Skin too! Some Tips and Advice.

Recently, my articles on skin care might seem more relevant for women. But I would like to point out that men and women’s skin are not as different from each other as you would think. In other words, a lot of the information I’ve given so far on skin care also applies to men. Since our skin is a mirror for what’s going on inside our bodies, good health is rewarded with good skin. This is true for everyone, women and men.

I know a lot of men do not bother at all with skin care. But I’m saying that you should! If the health of your skin is related to your body’s health, having good skin can only mean that you are taking good care of your overall health too.

To the men out there, I’m saying, take care of your skin for the sake of your health. Not a good enough reason for you? How about the fact that your face is the first thing that people see when they meet you? First impressions do count. Also your skin may look fine today, but what about in the long run? Preventive skin care is an often overlooked consideration among men. Take small measures to protect and nourish your skin today. And years down the road your future self will thank you for it.

So how to begin.

Well, let’s start with this.

A Simple Guide to Taking Care of your Skin for Men :

1)   Wash Your Face
Very basic, but very true. You need to wash your face twice a day, once after getting up in the morning. And again before going to bed. But don’t over wash either. Actually, most men tend to wash their face only when they’re in the shower. And they use the same soap on their face that they use for everything else. Soap bars, especially deodorant soap, are too harsh on facial skin and can leave a residue. Avoid cheapy soap bars. Instead, find facial washes that are specifically made for gently cleansing the face.

2)   Use A Toner
Men have larger skin pores than women, which can easily get clogged with oil and dirt. Toners help to reduce the size of the pores as well as balance the skin’s PH. There are lots of products out there, and some which are naturally based toners such as floral waters. Not all products will suit your skin’s needs so it’s up to you to figure out which type is right for you.

3)    Moisturize
After shaving, cleansing and toning, your skin needs nourishment. Moisturizers are great for fighting against premature signs of aging. Since men’s skin tend to be more oily than women’s, only a light moisturizer is needed. Try to find a moisturizer that includes at least SPF 15. Which brings me to my next point….

4)  (IMPORTANT!) Protect Your Skin from the Sun
The sun is by far the leading cause of premature aging and skin cancer. Unless you’re a smoker and I’ll touch on that later too.  For now let’s just talk about the sun. Those who are outdoors a lot especially need to think about finding ways to protect their skin from the sun. Use sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Wear a hat. Avoid peak hours of the sun when you can. Reapply sunscreen. These are habits that fall under preventive skin care. That’s what people have to understand. The benefits of preventive skin care are not immediate. It will only be years from now when you will be able to fully appreciate the importance of protecting your skin from the sun. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

Other Tips for Men:

  • When you shave, don’t dry shave. Apart from the painful nicks and bloody cuts, dry shaving can also result in ingrown hair. Use gels, creams, or oils even if you are using an electric razor. And yes, lathering up with a cheapy bar of soap is much better than nothing.
  • If you’re a smoker, STOP SMOKING. This is true for women too. Smoking is very bad for your skin. Should I repeat myself again? Smoking is very bad for you. So stop smoking already.
  • If your skin tends to be prone to acne, don’t pop the pimples. Try to address the root of the problem by first analyzing your overall health, your diet and your lifestyle.
