3 Reasons to Dry-Skin Brush

Aside from eating healthy, exercising and applying our daily skin care lotions and creams, there is another great practice that we can incorporate into our beauty regimen : Dry Skin Brushing!

Right before hopping in the shower, I exfoliate every inch of my skin with a soft, dry round wooden brush. This is something I try to do regularly, at least three times a week, but there are people out there who swear that in order to get the full benefits of dry-skin brushing, you need to do it every day for several months. However, if you want to be thorough, it takes about ten to fifteen minutes to get every inch of the skin on your body, so it’s obvious that not everyone has the time to do this every single day. But any amount of dry skin brushing done on a regular basis will still be beneficial for the health of our body and our skin.

BENEFITS:

1) Exfoliates the Skin
This is the most obvious benefit of dry skin brushing. Since the skin is constantly shedding dead cells and renewing itself, dry-skin brushing helps the efficacy of this process. The result is smooth and softened skin.

2) Stimulates the Lymphatic System
You may remember from previous posts, and I continue to repeat the fact that the skin is part of the body’s cleansing system. Dry skin brushing helps the body to cleanse itself more efficiently by increasing circulation to the skin and encouraging the discharge of metabolic wastes, which is a great help for our body’s lymphatic drainage. This is why a lot of people use dry-skin brushing during a detox, to help move toxins out of the body and strengthen the immune system.

3) Improves the Skin’s Texture
The increase of blood circulation helps to tighten the skin and improve muscle tone. Also, because it aids in a more even distribution of fat deposits, dry skin brushing helps to lessen the appearance of cellulite.

What to do :

You will need a wooden brush with natural (not synthetic) bristles, preferably one with a long enough handle so that it can reach all areas of your body. The dry-skin brush that I own has a removable end with a strap for the hand for better handling.

  • Start from the bottom of your feet, moving the brush upwards in vigorous circular motions. You want to brush with enough force to stimulate your skin and blood flow, but not so hard that you end up hurting yourself!
  • Brush all the way up your legs, over the abdomen, your bottom and your back. When you reach your arms, begin at your fingers and brush up your arms, moving toward the heart. Brush your shoulders and chest down, again towards the heart. The reason for this is to follow the movement of our lymphatic fluids, which is moving towards the heart.
  • Spend more time brushing around lymph node sites, such as the back of your knees, the inside of your elbows, the arm pits, the back of your neck, etc.
  • Use lighter strokes for sensitive areas like the breasts, and more vigorous strokes on areas like the sole of your feet.

Skin brushing should be done regularly before showering. If you have the time, then by all means, do it every day. Also, I should note that we are only talking about dry skin brushing everywhere on the body but the face. The skin on our face is much more fragile and requires a different type of exfoliation.

And if none of these reasons have convinced you to start dry skin brushing today, then perhaps you may just want to try it out for the simple reason that it feels very invigorating!
